The (formerly estranged and runaway) daughter of Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, Amaris Ravengard and her mother died during her birth. Only the goddess of the moon, Selune, saved the infant, telling her father that she did this because Amaris would later have to sacrifice her life for the fate of the realm. Ulder’s parenting was overbearing and overprotective, pushing Amaris away and ultimately leading her to run away. Leaving Baldur’s Gate at sixteen and taking the name Maxwell, she travels north to lead the life of an adventurer. Meeting Rhys, Kythorlin and Fynley Dormire, then M3-T41, the five travel together to Waterdeep. Falling in with Jarlaxle Baenre, Max and the others make a deal that involves Max returning to Baldur’s Gate under the pretenses that Jarlaxle found and sought to deliver Max home safely. The scheme works to Jarlaxle’s benefit, but nearly results in Max’s death when one of her brothers makes an attempt on Max’s life. Max’s ability to protect herself convinces Ulder that his daughter is stronger than he ever thought and gives his blessing to leave Baldur’s Gate. Max’s drive to help others brings her to the Feywild where she helps to save the witch Tasha and then the Elsir Vale where the Red Hand has begun a full-scale invasion. With the fate of everyone in the Elsir Vale at stake, Max has chosen to stand against the Red Hand.
