I have been commissioned to paint a homebrew character. A humanoid arachne which is a "fractured creature". All the details were provided by the client and it is an existing character drawn by different artists and this one was painted of course, in my art style.
The summary: "A female fractured arachne creature. 6 eyes, 4 arms, 8 spider legs, smooth chitin, dual flintlock pistol plus a flintlock rifle and plays a ghostly lute - in fighting pose."
Now when I thought of it, it was quite difficult to start with. First, I had to figure out its anatomy - which gave me quite some time to understand.
Let's start with the Spider:
Initially, I wanted a rough, textured chitin but the client described her chitin was smooth and segmented. So I added armor instead to for flavor! The lower torso felt like an armor and the back body, was really covered in description so I put a leather material. I also studied not only the appearances of spiders but also scorpion and crabs. For my inspiration, it was Cydaea of D3, Sheoldred of MtG, Lolth of D&D and FF15 Arachne Monster. In the end, I used the client's provided images as reference.
Next, the Girl:
I simply wanted her to look pretty and the sketch turned out to be her final looks. With an effort of rendition and adding face gesture, her face is born. Now the 4-arms, coated in smooth chitin - is my favorite part. But the anatomy, of course who else is the best reference, Sheeva of Mortal Kombat. Dressed in a simple white shirt and blue vest, extended all the way below her torso. You can say it's a custom cloth for arachnes.
Last, The Lute and Armaments:
The Lute! I really had to study this stuff. Like how many strings and frets. I researched old and new designs, including Dandelion's of Witcher. For the guns, there's a lot of reference so it's easier to draw although, I did not 100% understand how each part of the gun works.
Overall, it was a challenging character description. It is an existing character, therefore, there's a less room for creativity. Maybe it's because, when I hear "Arachne" it's always an enemy creature I imagined - specially Lolth. Still, I had fun and great time drawing the character as it led me to ask myself: "If I were to draw my own arachne, what would it look like?"
Thank you and I hope you enjoy the artwork!
P.S. Also thanks to my client: SlimeC0RE for the commission
